Streetscape Master Plan

Downtown Springfield is a dynamic and evolving place of historic buildings, natural beauty and cultural attractions in the heart of Vermont.  The Town of Springfield is embarking on a planning process to develop a plan to improve its Main Street corridor.  The plan addresses the ‘core’ of Main Street—from the Main/Clinton/South/ Mineral Street intersection to 100 River Street.

This Streetscape Master Plan is focused on the following aspects of the Main Street corridor:

  • Improvements to Public Spaces along Main Street

  • Gateways

  • Wayfinding

  • Strategies to Reconnect Springfield to the Riverfront

  • Parking

  • Main/Clinton/Mineral/South Intersection Improvements

  • Reuse of Underutilized Properties

Along this corridor we will work with an engaged community to identify a vision for improvements to public spaces that will make downtown a more attractive and livable setting for businesses, residents and visitors.  These improvements will strengthen the objective of reconnecting the downtown to its dramatic river setting and set the stage for revitalization and economic development in the downtown.

Project Leadership

The project will be guided by a Steering Committee representing a range of community representatives and the project sponsors.  The Steering Committee includes representatives from the Town of Springfield, downtown business and property owners, the Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Housing Authority, Springfield on the Move, Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission, Vermont Agency of Transportation and the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development.

This project is funded through the ‘Strong Communities, Better Connections’ program of the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) and the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD).  The project consultant team is led by Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI) (planning, engineering, urban design and landscape architecture).
